Historical Context: Over the decades, waves of social change showcased the power of youth movements, from the pivotal protests of the 1960s that redefined civil rights to the environmental activism of today’s generation. Yet, despite these inspiring examples, youth engagement in democratic activities remained uneven. The recent European Parliament elections highlighted this disparity, with youth voter turnout barely reaching 50.66%. This was not just a statistic; it was a reflection of a generation yearning for connection, empowerment, and recognition.

With a population exceeding 320,000, around 25% were young people aged 15 to 34, making Cluj one of the most youth-centric cities in Romania. This demographic boost infused the city with vibrancy, creativity, and a progressive mindset that fueled cultural, educational, and social initiatives.
At the core of Cluj’s thriving youth culture were its prestigious universities, with Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) leading as one of Romania’s largest and most respected higher education institutions. UBB, alongside Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Iuliu Hațieganu,” attracted thousands of local and international students each year, fostering a dynamic academic environment. These universities were known for their strong programs in science, technology, social sciences, and humanities, ensuring a well-rounded, highly skilled student body.
Youth engagement in Cluj was bolstered by numerous organizations and institutions focused on supporting young people’s development. The city boasted active NGOs such as GreenHope, which promoted civic participation and sustainability, as well as the Youth Federation of Cluj (Federatia Tinerilor din Cluj), which championed youth rights and coordinated diverse activities aimed at empowering the younger generation. These organizations, along with public youth centers and initiatives, played a pivotal role in nurturing leadership, volunteerism, and civic engagement among young people.
Cluj-Napoca’s commitment to youth involvement and education earned it recognition as a hub for conferences, workshops, and international projects that encouraged cultural exchange and personal growth.
